UK Culture Class

Last week, precisely on the English Language Day, we were lucky to have in our school something special: a Culture Class.

Luke Roberts, a native English teacher who works for Burlington Books, gave a presentation to some of our students about different topics of the English-speaking world.

Students learnt interesting things and had the opportunity to participate in the activities. The best part was that the event was fun and educative at the same time; they learnt and they laughed, can you ask for more?

You are very good, Luke, thank you for your time and we hope to see you again.

 

Everybody had a chance to participate and at the end there was a quiz in the style of the TV game show Who Wants to be a Millionaire? where one lucky winner was given a nice prize.

English Language Day

Yes, I know what you are thinking, today is the Book Day, and I encourage everybody to live incredible adventures and travel to exciting places through books, only reading the pages of a good book.

But today is also the English Language Day. It was established by the UNESCO in 2010, seeking "to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as promote equal use of all six of its official working languages throughout the organization".

23rd April is the anniversary of William Shakespeare's death, so it was chosen as the date for the English Language Day. It is the time of the year when English language is appreciated for the advantages it provides in an international level. It is the time to appreciate its rich history, cultural impact and its strange grammar and vocabulary. Happy English Language Day!

Double meaning

When a word or a phrase can be understood in two different ways, it has a double meaning; typically one of the interpretations is rather obvious while the other is more subtle.

In the following video, we are going to learn English with five jokes. As Alex (the teacher in the video) says, for many advanced learners "understanding English jokes is the last barrier  they have to break through before they can really master the language and capture its full meaning". Learn and enjoy.
